Multi-Stage Fuel Polishing System on Trailer
What is Diesel Fuel Polishing?
Diesel fuel polishing is the process of cleaning and filtering diesel fuel to remove contaminants such as dirt, water, and sludge.
Fuel contamination is a common problem in long-term fuel storage. Water, dirt, sludge, and microbial growth can accumulate in fuel tanks over time, especially in facilities that rely on stored fuel for emergency power. These contaminants can clog fuel filters, damage engines, and cause costly downtime.
How Does Fuel Polishing Work?
Diesel fuel is typically polished throughout a multi-stage filtration process that effectively removes a variety of contaminants.
An intake hose is situated inside the tank where contaminants are most prevalent. The hose will begin drawing contaminated fuel out of the fuel storage tank, at which point the fuel is then circulated through a series of filters and separators, each designed to target specific impurities.
Technicians are able to visually observe the fuel polishing process through a clear portion of the intake hose that is attached to the fuel storage tank.

Intake Hose in Fuel Storage Tank
As the fuel is being filtered, technicians can reseat the intake hose in order to target built-up contamination along the interior of the fuel tank.
Upon completion of the fuel polishing and tank cleaning service, the treated fuel is returned to the tank via return hose.
How does diesel fuel become contaminated?
Diesel fuel is prone to contamination from a variety of sources, especially when the fuel has sat untouched for a long period of time. Such contaminants degrade fuel quality and can negatively impact the performance of your equipment, causing costly and unexpected outages.
1. Water Contamination
Water contamination in diesel fuel often occurs through environmental factors like condensation, humidity, or leaks in the storage system. When fuel tanks are exposed to temperature changes, the resulting condensation can create water droplets that accumulate at the bottom of the tank.
2. Particulate Contamination
Dirt, dust, sand, and other debris particles contribute to particulate contamination in fuel storage tanks. Such contamination can occur throughout the transport of fuel, or as a result of poor fuel handling. Rust is also a form of particulate contamination that commonly contaminates diesel fuel that has been stored for long periods of time.
3. Microbial Growth
When moisture enters a fuel storage tank, the water content mixes with the fuel, creating a breeding ground for microbial growth. Microbes like bacteria and fungi thrive in the water-fuel interface, producing sludge that can clog filters and damage engines.
Fuel Tank Cleaning Services
Fuel cleanliness doesn’t stop at polishing – tank cleaning is just as important.
This process ensures that that clean fuel remains free of debris and contaminants once it re-enters the fuel storage tank. By combining diesel fuel polishing services with routine tank cleaning, you can maintain the highest level of fuel integrity and ensure that your systems run smoothly when you need them most.
